1. Preparation Before Departure
- Location : Siberut Island, Mentawai, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The main access route is via (Muaro Padang Port) by ferry / Mentawai Fast Boat ⇋ Siberut Island.
- Permits : You have permission to visit the traditional area (usually arranged by a local guide)
- Local Guide : It is mandatory to hire a local guide to help with communication with the Mentawai people.

- Is this tour suitable for solo travelers?
Yes. Solo travelers are welcome to join our Mentawai experience. Depending on the package, a private trip can also be arranged. Please contact us with your preferred travel dates so we can confirm availability and the most suitable option for you. - Do I need to be physically fit?
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some parts of the journey involve traveling by boat, walking on uneven forest paths, crossing small streams, and trekking through muddy or hilly terrain. You do not need to be an experienced hiker, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours in a tropical forest environment. The difficulty can vary depending on weather and trail conditions. - Where do we meet in Padang?
We normally meet at Muaro Padang Harbor, where you will take the ferry to Siberut. Your exact meeting point and meeting time will be confirmed before your trip. We recommend arriving in Padang at least one day before the scheduled departure to allow enough time for preparation. - How long is the ferry journey?
The ferry journey from Padang to Siberut generally takes several hours, depending on the route, sea conditions, and whether the ferry makes a stop at another port. For our trips, please allow approximately 4 – 6 hours for the ferry journey and keep your schedule flexible. Ferry schedules and travel times can change because of weather and operational conditions. - Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag?
No. For our standard Uma stays, we provide a mattress, blanket, pillow, and mosquito net. However, if you prefer extra warmth or personal sleeping equipment, you are welcome to bring your own sleeping bag or sleeping liner. - Is there electricity in the Uma?
Electricity is very limited in the remote Uma where we stay. Do not expect the same electricity facilities as in a hotel. We strongly recommend bringing a fully charged power bank, headlamp or flashlight, and keeping your electronic devices to a minimum. The limited electricity is part of experiencing everyday life in the remote Mentawai forest.
“If you are a photographer or YouTuber, you need to rent a generator - priced at IDR 600,000 / day - for a minimum of 8 hours of operation” - Is there mobile phone signal?
Mobile phone coverage can be very limited or unavailable in remote areas of Siberut Harbor. You may have a signal in some villages or more accessible areas, but you should not expect continuous coverage during your stay in the forest. We recommend informing your family or friends before entering the forest that communication may be temporarily unavailable. - Is Wi-Fi available?
No. Wi-Fi is generally not available in the remote Uma. This is an opportunity to disconnect from the internet and experience the forest, local community, and traditional way of life more directly. - What food will we eat?
Meals are prepared locally during your stay. Depending on the season and availability, you may experience traditional Mentawai food as well as simple everyday Indonesian meals. Food may include rice, sago, vegetables, fish, local ingredients, potatoes, vegetables, omelettes, tea, coffee, and other food prepared by the cooking service. Some traditional foods are connected to the forest and local way of life. If you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or special dietary requirements, please inform us before your trip. - Is the water safe to drink?
Water sources in the forest are part of everyday life for the local community, but visitors should not assume that untreated river, stream, or forest water is safe to drink. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and following your local guide's advice about drinking-water sources and treatment. - Can I take photos and video of the Mentawai people?
Yes, photography is welcome, but always ask for permission before photographing people. Please be especially respectful during ceremonies, rituals, private family moments, and when photographing Sikerei or sacred objects. Photography should be based on mutual respect rather than treating local people as attractions. Our local guide will explain appropriate cultural etiquette during the trip. Respect for permission and sacred practices is also recommended in local visitor guidance. - Can children join the tour?
Children may be able to join some of our trips, but this depends on their age, physical condition, the selected itinerary, and current forest conditions. Because the journey can involve long boat rides, trekking, muddy trails, simple accommodation, limited electricity, and remote locations, it may not be suitable for very young children. Please contact us before booking if you are traveling with children so we can recommend the most appropriate itinerary. - What happens if the ferry is cancelled because of weather?
Safety comes first. Ferry schedules can be delayed, changed, or cancelled because of bad weather or sea conditions. This is a normal consideration when traveling between Padang and the Mentawai Islands. If the ferry is cancelled or significantly delayed, we will help you with the necessary arrangements and communicate the available options. We strongly recommend not scheduling a flight or other important connection immediately after your planned return from Siberut. Allow some flexibility in your travel schedule. - What happens if I become sick during the trip?
Please inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell. Our local team will assist you and assess the situation. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may need to return to the nearest accessible village or medical facility. Because our trips take place in remote areas, access to medical facilities can take time. Travelers should bring their personal medication and are strongly encouraged to have travel insurance that includes medical and evacuation coverage. Please inform us about any important medical conditions, allergies, or medication requirements before the trip. - Can I extend my stay?
Yes, an extension may be possible depending on community availability, accommodation, local guide availability, transportation, and ferry schedules. If you would like to stay longer with the Mentawai community or combine your cultural journey with another experience in Siberut, please let us know as early as possible. TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES TO REACH THE MENTAWAI TRIBE ON SIBERUT ISLAND (GENERALLY FOR TOURISM OR VISITS TO MENTAWAI TRIBE COMMUTIES).
1. Travel to Padang (West Sumatra).
Padang is the main gateway to the Mentawai Islands.
- Flights from major cities in Indonesia to "Bandara Internasional Minangkabau (PDG)" near Padang (common routes: Jakarta, Medan, Kuala Lumpur, etc.).
- From the airport to "Pelabuhan Muaro Padang", take a taxi, ride-hailing service (Gojek/Grab), or local transport (approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic).
Tips: Because ferries to Mentawai usually depart early in the morning, many travelers must stay one night in the Padang city, preferably near Muaro Padang Harbor, before continuing to the Mentawai Island because ferry depart in the morning.
2. From Padang → Siberut Island, Mentawai.
There are one main sea transportation from Padang → Siberut island.
a. Mentawai Fast Ferry (Fast Boat)
Departs from Pelabuhan Muaro Padang (Muaro Padang Harbor) → Pelabuhan Muaro Siberut (Muaro Siberut Harbor).
Departure Schedule From Padang to Siberut Island
- Thursday : Depart 07:00 AM, arrive around 11:30 AM.
- Travel duration : Approximately 4 – 6 hours, depending on route and sea conditions.
- One-way ticket : Around IDR 350,000 – IDR 400,000 per person (additional charge for surfboards).
3. Return Schedule From Siberut Island to Padang
- Tuesday : Depart 2:30 pm, arrive around 7:00 PM
- Travel duration : Approximately 4 – 6 hours, depending on route and sea conditions.
- One-way ticket : Around IDR 350,000 – IDR 400,000 per person (additional charge for surfboards).
This is the fastest and most comfortable option for traveling to Siberut Island, Mentawai.
3. After Arriving at Muara Siberut Port.
Once you arrive at Muara Siberut Harbor:
- Private car transfer is arranged by local guide to a small village (Kulukubuk).
- From there, transportation continues by long boat or traditional river boat (pompong) along inland rivers, which are commonly used by local communities to reach remote villages and Mentawai tribal settlements.
4. Tips & Important Notes.
- Bring sufficient personal supplies when traveling to inland areas, as facilities in some Mentawai villages are very limited.
- If your main purpose is to interact with or stay among the Mentawai Tribe, land, sea, and river transportation to interior villages is usually arranged by tour operators or local guides.
